Surprisingly from all the crazy reasons why I have heard why to not let my kid watch the crazy antics of Spongebob Squarepants and Patrick Star I have yet to refuse my child from watching and here is why.
I have heard a large variety of excuses from almost every parent I have come to talk with about the subject of Spongebob as to why I shouldn't let my child watch it. Everything from the images to the sexual innuendos, the educated studies and the countless hours spent by each parent agonizing over the pros and cons. Why we even choose Spongebob as our main target and not half the other shows on television really beats me in the first place.
Halleigh has ALWAYS LOVED Spongebob. If I let her she would watch it faithfully but she not allowed that much time to choose whats on t.v. and her time is usually in the morning when Mickey and Doc McStuffins is on. Anyway, i'm not going to lie, I rather like Spongebob myself and have never fought her on the topic. We sit and happily watch it together on my time. Perks of being a young mom.
Here's what my daughter has actually learned from Spongebob and later reiterated to me in a series of conversations and songs sung by hers truly while I enjoyed the many made for adult secrets that she likes to just laugh with me when I laugh even though she doesn't know what she's laughing at.
1. The basics of driving and how not to drive- Mrs. Puff's Driving School has probably been like a Pre-Drivers Ed Program.
2. Friendship- I can't tell you how many times upon request I have sang F is for friends who do stuff together . U is for you and me. N is for and so on and so on.
3. The importance of having a job- Spongebob has worked at the Krusty Krab forever. Halleigh figured out yet that you need a job yet especially after asking one morning "Did daddy go to work like Spongebob?" lol weirdo
4. Stealing is bad- Plankton is always trying to steal that damn formula and does he ever win? No, because stealing is bad and bad people don't win according to all knowing Halleigh
5. It's o.k. to cry- We know Spongebob can be a crybaby but I think he actually taught her that it's alright. It's something my mother always had to repeat to me as a child.
6. Not to spend frivolously but not to be greedy- Even many of us adults could probably learn a thing or two from Mr. Krabs. He's Greedy which has gotten him into some trouble but he save like the best of them. The guy owns a restaurant.
7. It's important to stay healthy- I can't help but love McDonald's and all its filthy goodness but when me and Halleigh watched Squidward explode from eating too many krabby patties I think we both almost threw up our happy meals.
8. To be on time and have good attendance- Spongebob in many episodes shows how he doesn't like to be tardy and frequently freaks out upon learning that he is.
9. Safety- Safety comes in a variety of lessons from everyone's misfortunes to Jellyfishing Safety Techniques. They got it all.
10. Littering is bad- Enough Said.

So I guess I could make her stop watching it and let her hate me for not letting her watch a perfectly good show but I really think i'd rather go watch it with her.
